School Picture Day For Homeschool Students

I went to Public School from Kindergarten through senior year of High School, and every year I remember getting all dressed up and having my hair just right for school picture day.

I enjoyed school picture day. For me it was a day to look your best and be proud of the grade that you were in. I even liked those little black combs they gave us so we could fix our hair right before the photos were taken.

Each year it was the same Lifetouch backgrounds. That blue, acid wash-looking background, where we looked like we were floating in the clouds. I think one year we were even able to pick between blue, green or purple. That was pretty exciting lol.

Anyway, as I began homeschooling my daughter for Kindergarten this year, I realized I wouldn't have that collection of photos from Kindergarten and up.  So I decided I would have my own Homeschool Picture Day.

If you homeschool, I highly recommend you take yearly photos of your children. Now if you're like me, you most likely already have a ridiculous amount of photos of your children, so why not take a yearly homeschool photo of them?

The backdrop can be anything and doesn't have to be fancy. I used my homeschool room I have downstairs, and set up Grace's table in front of the whiteboard and alphabet wall hanging. I thought it would give it a nice "school" feel for the background.

I probably took about 20 photos and narrowed them down to my two favorites (another plus of taking the photos yourself).  I am so happy with how the turned out. I uploaded them and edited them in PicMonkey, and they turned out better than I had hoped for.

It was nice to be able to stop and fix her hair if needed, or tell her to smile with teeth or a closed mouth. Things I wouldn't be able to do with traditional school photos.

I'll be ordering my prints to give out from mpix.com (the website many professional photographers use), however, you can upload them to any photo website if you wish, or even print them out at home.

So to all my homeschool mommas out there...bust those cameras out (or even your smartphones) and have a Homeschool Picture Day!

What To Look For When Purchasing Educational Apps For Children

With a sea of apps out there, it's easy to get lost. When it comes to purchasing educational apps for your children, it becomes even harder.

Which ones do you choose? How can you make sure those apps are educational and age appropriate?
Are free apps better than paid?

I was able to ask Leap Frog's child development and learning expert, Dr. Jody Sherman LeVos those questions and more in a recent telephone interview.

Fall Leaves "Snow Globe"

My kids LOVE snow globes, so when I came across a Pinterest pin for a Fall Snow Globe, I knew we had to make one.  I only had to purchase a few items, since I had most of what is needed at home.

Here is what you'll need to make a Fall Leaves "Snow Globe"
  •  A Mason jar. I already had a jar, but in hindsight, I would have rather used one that didn't have any writing or markings on the glass.
  • Leaf Confetti. You can find it at almost any craft store or on Amazon
  • Moss. I used Frog or Terrarium Moss, but you can probably just use some that you find outside.
  • Glycerine. This will help your leaves fall more slowly.
  • A small tree branch
  • Glitter (optional). What's a snow globe without some sparkle?
  • Glue Gun
  • Water
Hot glue the small tree branch and moss to the inside of the jar lid (Parents please help with this).
It should look like what's pictured below:
Now it's time to glue on the leaves:
Next fill your Mason jar with water and then mix in the Glycerine.
I used 4 oz.  (I'm not sure if less or more would work better...I just winged it)
Next comes your glitter and leaves.
Lastly, put your tree into the Mason jar, tighten the lid (you can also glue it shut), give it a shake, and watch the beautiful Autumn leaves fall.

Sienna's Locket Children's Book Review and Giveaway

Photo from Chrissy Bernal.com

Most of you know that October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, but did you know that October is also Dwarfism Awareness Month? I recently was given a book to review titled Sienna's Locket, written by Chrissy Bernal. Chrissy is the mother of the only known set of twins in the world where one twin is a Primordial Dwarf.

Sienna's Locket is a heart warming story about how we are all beautifully and wonderfully made by God.
Sienna or "Sinny" (written after Chrissy Bernal's daughter) accidentally lets lose her pet bird while cleaning its cage. The bird flies into a small cabinet and Sinny, being the small size that she is, is able to fit into the cabinet to find the bird.
Photo from Sienna's Locket
While in the cabinet, Sienna finds a small pink and black ladybug who is sad because she is different from the other ladybugs. Sienna shares that she is also different, and that our differences are what make us special.
Photo From Sienna's Locket
Because Sienna is so small, she is able to save the bird, and Rosie the ladybug and her become great friends.

My daughter absolutely loves this book and your child will too. Also, look for the Sinny-Size Series of children’s books based on Sienna’s adventures.  They take you through colorful adventures where Sienna discovers the great things that come from being different. What a wonderful lesson for our children!

During the month of  October and November, Chrissy Bernal will be donating proceeds from the Sinny-Size Series sales to the Little People of America.
